Pro Seniors attorney, Miriam Sheline, is featured in an Akron Beacon Journal article by Amanda Garrett about the changes in Medicaid in Ohio. In July, Ohio is switching from a 209B Medicaid state to a 1634 Medicaid state, and this is going to affect thousands of people in Ohio.

Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving on Tuesday, December 1st, is the perfect opportunity to give back in an impactful way to a cause you believe in, like Pro Seniors. Every day, we help seniors resolve their legal and long-term care problems through our legal services and ombudsman program. Ohio SMP is trying to prevent problems by teaching seniors to protect themselves from Medicare fraud and identity theft.

Managing hotline attorney Mike Walters has an article in the November CERA Blog, produced by Elder Law of Michigan’s Center for Elder Rights Advocacy, about how hotlines can create impactful litigation. Using Wheaton vs. McCarthy as an example, Walters shows how Pro Seniors’ Legal Hotline was able to identify the problem and clients in a timely manner, and as a result, ensure justice for thousands of Ohio’s seniors.

Pro Seniors Executive Director Rhonda Y. Moore has been awarded the Denis Murphy Award from the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation. The Denis Murphy Award was created in 1998 in honor of Denis J. Murphy, the Foundation’s founding board president, and is given annually to recognize outstanding leadership and advocacy within Ohio’s legal aid societies.

Pro Seniors filed a federal class action challenging the way that the State of Ohio defines the word “family” under the Medicaid Act, which requires states that receive federal Medicaid funds to provide low-income Medicare beneficiaries with financial assistance to help pay their out-of-pocket Medicare costs. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals agreed that “family” does indeed include the Medicare beneficiary’s spouse.
